The 10th Pacific Islands Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas has opened for registration and interested members of the public and organisations are now invited to register online! Discounted registration is available from now until end of January 2020.
The conference will be held in New Caledonia at the Tjibaou Cultural Centre 19-24 April, 2020. The conference is an important opportunity for professionals in the field, community members, students, as well as interested members of the public, to be involved in the Pacific region’s most significant conservation event.
The conference will be hosted by the Government of New Caledonia in coordination with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation (PIRT), currently chaired by the Director of the Oceania Regional Office of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The theme of the 2020 conference is ‘Nature Conservation Action for a Resilient Pacific.’
“The Pacific Islands Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected Areas is an important event that will identify regional priorities as input into post-2020 global biodiversity discussions at the Convention on Biological Diversity Conference of the Parties in China later in 2020. Pacific people’s livelihoods depend almost entirely on the health of our natural environment, and it is not only our responsibility to protect and conserve it for our own prosperity but also for future generations” said Mr Kosi Latu, Director General of SPREP.
“We have seen youth mobilising in protest across the globe demanding action on environmental issues, and we could not agree more with them that we need to see more action to protect our environment and conserve our biodiversity. That’s why this conference is so important, and why I personally want to encourage our Pacific people, and those working in our region, to attend this event – to come together, share and discover new solutions for our growing challenges.”
